Here at Bourland Music Dot Com, we have
exclusive videos thanks
to the folks at BB
Rover's and Jollyville City Limits.
Jollyville City Limits (JCL) is the brain
child of D.P.
Dunn and Bourland (shown to the right). JCL is a live video
and audio
recording series that
will eventually be available on DVD and possible TV distribution. During
the fall of 2004, we captured some stellar performances on
video and hi-fi sound. JCL
was created with the idea of giving back to the music community of
Austin
by providing a vehicle for performers of all types to
capture and distribute live performances of their music and tell
the
story behind the music with interviews and narratives about their
songs. Jollyville
City Limits began its life as an open
mic started by David
Patrick Dunn in
1995. The open mic is now entering its tenth year
of Sunday nights at BB
Rover's. Hosted by volunteers and members of the Austin Songwriters Group,
the Jollyville City Limits open mic has been and continues to be a
wonderful venue for artists
to share their songs with a welcoming community of singer songwriters
and music lovers. In addition to the usual Sunday night open mic, the
folks at Jollyville City Limits created a "Best
of the JCL Open Mic"
series. Each week a performer from the open mic is nominated by that
week's hosts to play at the next Best of the JCL Open Mic, which
is taped live and soon to be available here at Bourland Music. But
wait, that's not it, there's more! Thanks
to D.P.
Dunn
and the folks at BB
Rover's, we've also captured some stellar performances on
video and high fidelity sound from featrured artists like:
Jimmy George, shown
to the left with Johnny Big at the first ever Jollyville City Limits #1.
Bourland first met Jimmy George by pure chance. Jimmy was
dating the girl that lived across the street from Bourland.
Bourland sees this guy out in front of his house with polka-dotted
hair and he thinks to himself, "what a crazy looking dude, I probably
ought to meet him!" So he did just that. The next time Bourland and
Jimmy would cross paths was at the now debunked Godsfest. There was Jimmy doing
that whacky looping thing, man is that cool or what? The next
time Jimmy and Bourland would meet was indirect, Bourland was at work
standing in line to pay for lunch and there's this gentleman with a
badge that says Jim George. Bourland thought how many Jim George's
could there be? So he introduced himself and it was none other thatn
Jimmy dad! Jimmy had moved to Colorado for a while, but then one night
at the JCL open mic Bourland hears there are some professional
musicians in the house. Bourland goes to inestigate and there he is,
minus the polka-dots, Himmy George. Whew! What a story! Anyhoom, here
is Jimmy
George performing: Black Sabbath's
War Pigs, Texas style! (3
min WMV file). Be sure
to check out the rest of Jimmy George's perfromance recorded
live at Jollyville City Limits #1.
Django Porter,
shown to the right at Jollyville
City Limits #2. Django is a wotrld class musician, who has
performed with such greats as Freddy Powers, Merle Haggard and Willie
Nelson. Bourland first met Django Porter while searching
for a peddle steel player to do some studio work on Bourland's debut
CD, Cathedrals of Sand.
Bourland went to Poodie's
Hiltop Bar and Grill to meet Price Porter, the peddle steel player
for the Troubadillos.
Django, Price's son, was sitting in with the Troubadillos that night
and Bourland was impressed. While Price Porter said he was interested
in doing the studio work, Bourland needed it done on the cheap, so he
played slide himself instead. The offer to Price is always there, if he
cares to give it a whirl. It sure would beat the heck outta Bourland's
slide playing. The next time Bourland ran into Django was at the
Trophy's open mic/singer songwriter showcase. Django was sitting in
with Colin Brooks, a fine guitar
player in his own right, but there was Django with that unmistakeable
sound. To quote Colin, "Man, Django, whacka whacka whacka and away you
go! Incredible!" We won't include any explatives Colin might have also
used at the time. So here is Django
Porter and his Gypsy Jazz (3
min Windows Movie file).
Be sure to check out the rest of Django Porter's
perfromance recorded
live at Jollyville City Limits #2.
Matt Hubbard, shown
to the left at Jollyville City Limits #2.
Bourland first met Matt when the Longbranch Inn open mic moved to
Trophy's just before SXSW 2004. Hosted by
Matt Hubbard, whoa! this was no ordinary open mic. Performers included Guy Forsyth, Carolyn
Wonderland, Calvin Russell, Mike Robberson, Matt
Hubbard, JT Van Zandt and Wendy Colonna
just to name a few. Matt has been very helpful and encouraging to
Bourland. Heck, Matt is just a good old fashioned nice guy and very
supportive of other performers. He hooked Bourland and DJ Buffalo Phil
with a great slot at Trophy's following the above mentioned folks
during SXSW. He also booked Bourland for a great a great gig at The
Hole in
the Wall, Matt plays there on the 1st Sunday of every month. Thanks for
everything Matt! Anyhoo, while in Austin Matt
has engineered recordings with
Willie Nelson, Ray Benson, Ray Price and Gillian Welch and appeared as
a musician on recordings with Willie, Emmylou Harris, Kimmie Rhodes,
Nathan Hamilton and others. Matt co-produced, recorded and mixed Willie
Nelson’s “Rainbow Connection” released June 2001 by Island Records.
Matt played keyboards, harmonica, bass, percussion and did backup
vocals. The album earned Willie a Grammy nomination for Country
Album of the Year. So here is Matt
Hubbard performing: Let It Bleed
(3
min WMV file).
Be sure to check out the rest of Matt Hubbard's
perfromance recorded
live at Jollyville City Limits #2.
Hollis
Webb, shown to the right performing at the first ever "Best
of the JCL Open Mic". Hollis has a knack for turning any
song you can imagine into a bonafide sing along song. Here for your
listening pleasure is Hollis
Webb performing Promise Land
(3
min WMV file). Be sure
to watch for more videos from Hollis. Also check out Hollis
and the Mighty McGregor's new album "Quick Relief". Sheesh, Bourland had no idea the
guy was so dang talented. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a star in our
midst.
Cheers,
Bourland
